Wolfpack Pulse Check: Momentum Building

Wolfpack Pulse Check: Momentum Building

The Washington Wolfpack went toe-to-toe with the Albany Firebirds last weekend in a back-and-forth game. They ended up losing by eight points, but everything Head Coach JR Wells and the team have been working on started playing out. Multiple players stood out, but none brighter than quarterback Jaiave Magalei.

“I told you that kid was special,” was the first thing Coach JR told me when we talked this weekend.

Building Momentum

The Wolfpack would have preferred a win, of course. However, the positive movement and momentum will help this team as something to build on. There were so many differences between this game against Albany and the one last week versus Nashville.

“Everything was just clicking,” Coach JR said. “It’s one of those things, to move an offense, you have to have the timing and understanding of the game. It wasn’t brand new that we got the ball out quickly. However, we went from nine sacks against Nashville to not having one sack at all.”

I asked the coach what thoughts went through his mind as he saw the offense clicking and moving the ball efficiently down the field. “Finally,” he said with a chuckle. It echoes the sentiment from when I asked their quarterback, Jaiave Magalei, who said he felt relief.

Coach JR has been super pleased with how Magalei has handled his first two games starting, especially given that it was against last year’s two Championship match participants.

Looking Forward

This week, the Wolfpack hit the road down to Texas to take on the Beaumont Renegades. They’ll face off at 3 PM local time, 1 PM Pacific.

“We’ve been watching the film, but we’re just preparing to go out there and execute. Do our jobs and make adjustments accordingly.” Coach mentioned he is preparing for the man-defense that Beaumont has been running the majority of the time.

The Wolfpack are looking to build on last week, and you won’t want to miss it. If the offense can continue to move the ball down the field and have Coach Wells’ vision play out, this team could be right in the mix come playoffs.
