Washington Wolfpack Week 3 Player Of The Game: Aakiel Greer

The final score didn’t tell the whole story for the Washington Wolfpack in their first road game of the season. A 48-3 loss to a stacked opponent stung, no doubt about it. But even on a night when the offense struggled to find its rhythm early, one guy kept showing up play after play, refusing to let the scoreboard define the night. That guy was veteran wide receiver Aakiel Greer. The same player whom Coach JR Wells couldn’t stop raving about all offseason. The one who embodies everything the Wolfpack is trying to build. Aakiel Greer is your Week 3 Washington Wolfpack player of the game!
Catch After Catch: Greer’s Quiet Dominance
The Wolfpack rolled out a new starting quarterback in Jaiave Magalei, coming off the bye week. Coach Wells wanted a fresh look after Week 1. Magalei needed a few drives to settle in and get comfortable under center. However, once he found his footing, he started spreading the ball around and finished with sixteen completions. There was one target he kept coming back to.
Greer hauled in eight catches for 68 receiving yards. That’s not just volume. Its impact. He accounted for roughly half of the team’s total catches and a whopping 60 percent of their receiving yards. In a game where the offense was searching for answers, Greer was the safety net. Reliable and consistent. Exactly what you want from your veteran guy.
His stat line was good, but it could’ve been even bigger. Late in the game, a deep ball sailed into the end zone right to Greer, who came down with the catch. He hauled it in cleanly for what would’ve been his first touchdown of the season and pushed his yardage north of 80 for the game. However, then the flag came in, calling it back. A holding call that wiped the whole play off the board. Frustrating? Absolutely. But it didn’t erase the fact that Greer was winning his battles all night against a really physical and well-coached Kats secondary. When the dust settled, he bumped his season receiving total to 130 yards.
The touchdown that came back may not have counted. However, it mattered to the Wolfpack either way.
“It was due. We really need that, not just as a team, but as an organization. It was more than just a touchdown. It was something to build off of and momentum to build off of.” It was also an important play for Greer, who was playing in front of friends and family.
“I had family from the surrounding areas, from Memphis, Tennessee, and around that, all came to see me play. Some people I played with in college were there and drove hours and took time out of their day. So that touchdown was just some extra push, even if it was called back.”
The Culture Setter
I’ve written about Aakiel Greer before, and every time I ask Coach Wells about him, the answer is the same. Pure positivity.
“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate him,” Coach said. “He’s almost like my son. He’s bought in, and he does all the right things. He asks the right questions. Most importantly, he leads the guys forward in the culture. It’s important that you weave it all together, and it’s having guys like AG holding that standard and holding the other guys accountable to the standard. I can see that every day, and I’m beyond appreciative of him.”
That’s high praise from a coach who’s worked with a lot of players. Greer isn’t just a player, though. He’s the guy making sure the standard doesn’t slip when things get tough. In a league where rosters turn over fast and new faces show up every week, having a veteran like him locking in the culture is priceless.
“I feel like the culture that Coach JR has set is a way of life,” Greer said. “Everything he’s taught us in the game of football applies to everyday life. Like what you stand for, what the game of football means to you, the important things. You have to be very disciplined in it all, take care of it, and make sure nothing harms it. The standard and the culture is everything.”
Greer’s Journey: From HBCU Star to Professional Grind
Aakiel Greer’s path to the Wolfpack wasn’t a straight line. In fact, it was a masterclass in resilience. He was all set to play his college ball at Florida Atlantic under Lane Kiffin. The offense was a perfect fit for his skill set. Speed, hands, and the ability to create after the catch. Then, suddenly, Kiffin bolted for Ole Miss, and the offer disappeared. Most kids would’ve been rattled. Greer? With some of the other offers already off the table, he chose St. Augustine’s University, a smaller HBCU with a rich football tradition and an even richer family atmosphere.
The moment he stepped on campus, it felt like home. The coaches treated him like family. The faculty did the same. Greer responded by absolutely flourishing. He put up numbers, earned respect, and left the program better than he found it.
From there, the pro journey had its share of detours. The MLFB league, a stop in Wichita, and a brief time in Arizona. Every time it looked like he was about to break through, the doors would close on the current program. Most guys would’ve walked away. Greer just kept grinding. He stayed ready, kept working, and trusted that the right opportunity would come.
That opportunity is right here with the Wolfpack, and he’s making the most of every snap. This Saturday night against the Firebirds, don’t be surprised if the guy wearing the Wolfpack uniform and making plays in the middle of the field is the same one Coach Wells sings praises of. Aakiel Greer isn’t just catching passes. He’s helping build something that lasts. And the best part? He’s just getting started.
Building Real Chemistry with Magalei
Stats are great, but the real story from this game might be something you can’t measure on the stat sheet. That would be the chemistry that’s already starting to click between Greer and Magalei.
Magalei didn’t just target Greer when things were easy. He went to him when the pocket was collapsing, and the clock was ticking. Greer was exactly where he needed to be, every single time. That kind of trust doesn’t happen overnight, especially with a new signal-caller. But you could see it developing right there on the field. Quick glances, little nods, the kind of rapport that wins games down the stretch.
“It’s been amazing (getting to work with Magalei). As one of the leaders, any new player that comes in, I want to let them know what the standard here is and the culture JR has built here. With him being the quarterback, it’s no different. But with any quarterback, you have to rally behind them. Getting that connection with him and building that bond away from training and off the field has been great. I think that spoke volumes with us playing in our first game together. I feel like that was just a small taste of what’s to come.
The Wolfpack will lean on that connection even more this Saturday, May 2nd, when the defending AF1 Champions, the Albany Firebirds, roll into the Angel of the Winds Arena. These two teams met last season in the Wolfpack’s final regular-season game. Greer put up 57 yards and a touchdown in that one. He’s already circled this matchup on his calendar. If the chemistry he and Magalei started building last weekend keeps growing, expect Greer to have an even bigger night.
“Coach JR is such a great play caller, and I can honestly say I do think we’re going to put a lot of points on the board,” Greer said of the upcoming game. “I’m not just saying it, but I truly believe in my heart that we will shock the world on Saturday, and I’m ready to play my ass off, just like always.
