Training Camp Notebook: One Week In

Training Camp Notebook: One Week In

The Washington Wolfpack are officially one week into training and are just getting started. They are only two more Sundays away from kicking off their third season! Head coach JR Wells has been fired up all offseason and he's watching the culture he's setting the standard for play out on the field.

Improvements From Day 1

When I asked the coach about the biggest improvement from Day 1 to today, he had trouble picking just one thing. Naturally, a lot of things have improved from the first day to today. However, one of the biggest things he’s seen improve the most is the little things. The little things can often add up to big things.

“That’s the standard for the program, really focusing on the little things," Coach Wells said. "It’s easy to want to get into the X’s and O’s and play football and do all that, but we had to really learn how to move as one unit. Something as simple as running our lines as a unit. You’ll be able to see the difference. Those simple things are the things that matter the most with our program. It’s the surface level that people look at, but we want to make sure our roots are strong for the breakthrough."

Standing Out

Each time I talk with Coach, I ask about one or two people who have stood out to him. Today, he highlighted Q (Quintavius Workman), who joined the team this year.

"Q is something special," Coach said. "His demeanor, his approach, his professionalism, how he carries himself, and how he attacks the day and leads as a leader. It's a special thing to have him."

The Wolfpack have a plethora of receivers like Workman and Aakiel Greer, who have the experience and will make life difficult for opposing defenses.

The pack of guys on the team are putting in a lot of effort and are hungry to start winning games this year. From quarterback to wide receivers to defense, they're putting in extra time in the film room and working hard. These guys are competing, and the end result is going to be a great product to see on the turf.
